私は、カリフォルニア州のメンドシーノ海岸に住み、仕事をする、という幸運に恵まれたアーティストです。ここの自然環境の美しさは、アートを産むのにピッタリな穏やかでかつ刺激的である雰囲気を創り出しています。私が選んだ画材は、「燃やす」という意味のエンカウスティックというもので、顔料を豊富に練り込んだ蜜蝋を溶かし、それを板の上に塗り重ねていく手法です。いくつかの作品は、2015年に姉妹都市のアーティストと一緒に行った日本訪問から生まれました。私にとっては初めての旅行でしたが、美しい景色と、フレンドリーな人々、ホスピタリティにあふれた才能豊かなアーティストたちとの出会いにとても感動しました。そこで集めた紙やこの作品を作るために撮った写真を組み合わせて制作しました。私は色、パターン、テクスチャーを用いて画材を探求し続けています。
I am an artist fortunate to live and work on California’s Mendocino coast. The beauty of our natural environment creates a calm, inspiring atmosphere in which to make art. The medium I choose is encaustic, meaning “to burn” and it involves melting beeswax which is infused with rich pigments and then painting, spreading layering it onto a board. Some of the pieces came from my 2015 visit to Japan with the Sister Cities artists. It was my first trip and I was very moved by the beauty and the friendly and hospitable, talented artists we met. I incorporated papers collected there and pictures I took to create this work. I continue to work with color, patterns, and texture to explore the medium.
